Wisdom Teeth Removal in South Jordan, UT

Utah’s Third Molar Experts

Wisdom teeth are known as third molars. They develop around the age of 17, and most dentists and oral surgeons recommend having them extracted as soon as possible. There is not enough space in the mouth for an extra set of molars. Leaving them untreated puts your oral health at risk, and your other teeth could suffer as well. If your dentist discovers that third molars are developing, he or she will refer you to an oral surgeon for evaluation.

If you suspect the presence of wisdom teeth and would like a consultation, or if you have been referred to us, please call our South Jordan office to schedule an appointment. Dr. Harris, Dr. Park, Dr. Brown, Dr. Wood, and Dr. Holladay will create a custom treatment plan based on your specific wisdom teeth removal needs.

Advantages of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Our oral surgeons at Utah Surgical Arts regularly perform wisdom tooth extractions. By undergoing this procedure, you are protecting your health and preventing numerous complications from having the chance to appear. For example, it is not uncommon for a wisdom tooth to grow sideways. This is called impaction, and an impacted wisdom tooth is trapped beneath gums, angled toward your other molars. It can push other teeth out of place, destroy roots, and damage nerves. An impacted tooth is difficult to clean, and can lead to cysts and tumors.

You can avoid these complications and many more by having your wisdom teeth extracted at Utah Surgical Arts in South Jordan, UT. When left to develop on their own, wisdom teeth are known to cause:

  • Pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, tenderness
  • Bad breath due to infection
  • Gum disease, which can progress to irreversible tooth decay
  • Cysts and tumors
  • Cavities due to bacterial buildup
  • Dental shifting

Our trusted surgeons at Utah Surgical Arts have safely extracted wisdom teeth for years. We will customize a treatment plan that delivers the highest level of care before, during, and after your procedure. Contact our South Jordan office today to schedule your consultation.

The Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

During your consultation appointment at our South Jordan office, your oral surgeon will review your medical history and perform a thorough examination of your mouth and jaw. This includes taking 3D CBCT scans. Your surgical options, as well as your anesthesia and sedation options, will be discussed and determined, and any questions that you may have will be answered. This procedure is often performed using IV sedation, allowing you to rest in a sleep-like state during surgery.

Your procedure will begin according to your customized treatment plan, with the administration of the chosen anesthetic. When undergoing IV sedation, you must arrange for an adult to be present at the office during surgery and drive you home after. The adult should remain with you for 24 hours, as you will still be under the effects of anesthesia.

Impacted or partially erupted third molars may need to be broken up before removal. Exposed teeth can simply be pulled out using forceps. Any incisions will be stitched closed, and you will rest in our comfortable recovery area until you are awake enough to be driven home.

If your surgery can be performed at Utah Surgical Arts, the cost savings may be significant. Many patients who were unable to have the procedure due to the high cost involved were able to have the procedure performed at Utah Surgical Arts.

Cindy Reviews Her Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure

"Hi! I’m Cindy from Highland, Utah, and I brought 9 of my 11 children to Utah Surgical Arts to have Dr. Harris and Dr. Park take care of their wisdom teeth. My oldest two went to two separate oral surgeons, and when we discovered Utah Surgical Arts, as referred by our dentist, we were pleased and continued bringing the rest of our children here. In fact, one time, we did three children on the same day so that we’d all have everyone recovering at the same time. When you live at the south end of Utah County, in Spanish Fork or Payson, or in the north end in Alpine or Highland, Utah Surgical Arts is worth coming to. They do an excellent job!"

"Hi, my name’s Paige; I’m from Provo, Utah. I came to Dr. Harris to get my wisdom teeth out. I work for Graf Orthodontics as a clinical assistant there. We really value high-quality care and efficient care, and so we actually refer to Dr. Harris a lot. That’s why I came to him because I know that I would get the best care that I could get. I was really nervous about the whole experience since I’ve never had a surgery before. Dr. Harris actually put in the IV for me since I was really nervous, so that was very sweet of him. And the whole experience was really great!"

"My name’s Michelle, and I live in Pleasant Grove. I first came to Utah Surgical Arts when my oldest needed his wisdom teeth out. Not knowing what to do, I asked around and was recommended to come here and when I came, they were able to explain the procedures and comfort me and let me know what was going to happen. He had the procedure done and it was wonderful — quick recovery, minimal swelling. So that when the next two children needed their wisdom teeth out, there was no question — I was coming to Utah Surgical Arts. If you live anywhere in the Utah Valley area, Spanish Fork, Payson, Orem, American Fork, I would highly recommend coming to Utah Surgical Arts. I love that they are not only dentists, they’re medical doctors and that they can explain in layman terms what’s going to happen and what to expect and what to look for, and my children did wonderful and recovered quickly."

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have dry socket or normal pain?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot inside of the empty tooth socket becomes dislodged. It is very painful, as the nerve and bone underneath become exposed. If you suspect dry socket or are in a great amount of pain beyond what is expected following surgery, please contact our office. It is common to feel some degree of discomfort following any type of surgical procedure, but this is usually managed with over-the-counter pain medications, ice packs, and rest.

Can I get all four wisdom teeth removed at once?

We recommend having all wisdom teeth extracted at the same time. This prevents the need for additional procedures, and you can eliminate the risk factors associated with third molars in one single surgical visit.

How long is recovery after having wisdom teeth pulled?

You can expect to resume normal activities a day or two following surgery. You will need to take care of your surgical sites, which take about 2 weeks to heal, by following the instructions we provide.

What happens if I don’t have an impacted tooth removed?

An impacted wisdom tooth may or may not cause pain. Your dentist will check for wisdom teeth during regular checkups. Wisdom teeth are large, and if one grows sideways, it can damage adjacent teeth. These teeth have naturally large, unpredictable nerves that can grow in sporadic directions, puncturing nearby nerves and the roots of other teeth. It’s possible for an impacted tooth to not cause any pain now, but suddenly a great deal of pain if a nerve is struck later in life.

Impacted teeth can partially erupt, making it difficult to clean around. When bacteria builds up around a tooth, cysts and tumors begin to form. These can be painful, and lead to the progression of periodontal disease, tooth decay, and many other problems. Avoid these issues by having wisdom teeth extracted at Utah Surgical Arts.
