Many people develop a set of back molars called wisdom teeth. They usually come in between the ages of 17-25. While these final teeth can increase chewing function, often there is not enough space in the mouth for them to develop correctly. When there is not enough room in the mouth for a wisdom tooth to break through the gums, it is said to be impacted. Leaving impacted wisdom teeth in the mouth may cause health and dental problems in the future. Removing the wisdom teeth will usually alleviate the possibility of future issues, especially if they are removed early in their development before any problems arise. Removing wisdom teeth at a young age (15-17) may significantly reduce the surgical complications that can occur during third molar extraction. Impacted wisdom teeth sometimes grow in pushing against the second molar, while other times the teeth barely break through the gums. In some cases, their presence can go unnoticed as they are trapped beneath the gum and jawbone. The improper development of wisdom teeth can cause a variety of problems:
- Swelling, stiffness, tenderness, pain—even bad breath—all signs of periodontal disease.
- Disruption of the natural alignment of teeth (dental crowding or shifting)
- Cysts and tumors that can result in irreparable damage to the jawbone and healthy teeth
- Bacterial growth causing cavities that cannot be restored
To properly assess your needs, the surgeons at Utah Surgical Arts will perform a thorough examination of your mouth and jaw, including x-rays, and will review your medical history. Afterward, you and your doctor will discuss viable options for the extraction of the teeth, if needed, as well as a surgical plan that is best for your situation. As it is a surgical procedure, your options for sedation, including nitrous oxide and general anesthesia, will also be discussed. Our primary goal at Utah Surgical Arts is to ensure that each patient’s concerns are adequately addressed and that each patient receives the highest quality of care before, during, and after the procedure. The doctors at Utah Surgical Arts have undergone years of extensive training beyond dental school, are highly qualified to provide you with specialty care, and can address any issue that may arise before, during, or after your procedure. If you think you may be in need of this procedure, we invite you to make an appointment at either one of our offices.
