What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure performed at our office in Payson, UT, because the average mouth is too small to accommodate the proper growth of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth, which are the last set of molars to grow in the back of your mouth, usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. While this final set of teeth can increase chewing function, often there is not enough space in the mouth for them to develop correctly. When there is not enough room in the mouth for a wisdom tooth to break through the gums, it is said to be impacted. Leaving impacted wisdom teeth in the mouth may cause health and dental problems in the future.
Why should I undergo wisdom teeth removal in Payson, UT?
Removing the wisdom teeth will usually alleviate the possibility of future issues, especially if they are removed early in their development before any problems arise. Removing wisdom teeth at a young age (15–17) may significantly reduce the surgical complications that can occur during third molar extraction. Impacted wisdom teeth sometimes grow in pushing against the second molar; other times, the teeth barely break through the gums. In some cases, their presence can go unnoticed as they are trapped beneath the gum and jaw bone. The improper development of wisdom teeth can cause a variety of problems:
- Swelling, stiffness, tenderness, pain — even bad breath — all signs of periodontal disease.
- Disruption of the natural alignment of teeth (dental crowding or shifting)
- Cysts and tumors that can result in irreversible damage to the jaw bone and healthy teeth
- Bacterial growth causing cavities that cannot be restored
Wisdom Teeth Removal in Payson, UT
Our primary goal at Utah Surgical Arts is to ensure that each patient’s concerns are adequately addressed and that each patient receives the highest quality of care before, during, and after the procedure. The doctors at Utah Surgical Arts have undergone years of extensive training beyond dental school, are highly qualified to provide you with specialty care, and can address any issue that may arise before, during, or after your procedure. If you think you may be in need of this procedure, we invite you to make an appointment at either one of our offices.
To properly assess your needs, the surgeons at Utah Surgical Arts will perform a thorough examination of your mouth and jaw, including X-rays, and will review your medical history. Afterward, you and your doctor will discuss viable options for the extraction of the teeth, if needed, as well as a surgical plan that is best for your situation. As it is a surgical procedure, your options for sedation, including nitrous oxide and general anesthesia, will also be discussed. Once we have developed a treatment specific to your needs, we will provide you with instructions for your pre- and post-operative care and send you home.
It’s important that you review these instructions before your surgical appointment so that you are fully prepared for your procedure. When you come in for your surgery, we will administer your chosen form of anesthesia. Most wisdom teeth removal patients choose general anesthesia so they can sleep comfortably throughout the procedure. While you sleep, your oral surgeon will expose the wisdom teeth, remove any bone that may be blocking his path, and then extract the wisdom teeth. In some cases, he will break your molars into smaller pieces to make removal easier. Once your teeth have been removed and your gums have been stitched up, we will wake you up, and you will go home to rest and recover.
